What works really well at home
Most Hyrox prep doesn't require specific equipment: running, bodyweight strength work, and core training are a solid base, largely enough for the first weeks of preparation.
- Running — outdoors, treadmill, or even jump rope in a small indoor space
- Squats, lunges, burpees — bodyweight, no equipment needed
- Core work — plank, side plank, mountain climbers
- Farmer's carry — with water jugs, grocery bags, or dumbbells if available
Simulating each Hyrox station at home
SkiErg
Hard to fully replace without a machine. Alternative: resistance band pulls anchored high up, combined with jump squats to mimic the combined upper/lower effort.
Sled Push / Sled Pull
Weighted lunges, jump squats, or loaded hill walking (loaded backpack) work similar muscle groups and maintain the strength needed while waiting for a real sled.
Burpees Broad Jump
Fully doable at home or outdoors: classic burpees combined with a broad jump, no equipment needed.
Rowing
Without a rower, a resistance band pull combined with dynamic core work reproduces part of the movement, until you can access a real rower at a gym.
Farmers Carry
Simulates very well at home with water jugs, loaded grocery bags, or dumbbells: walk a given distance while holding a stable posture.
Sandbag Lunges
A backpack loaded with books or bottles effectively replaces the sandbag for weighted lunges.
Wall Balls
The hardest to replicate without a medicine ball and target. Jump squats with a light weight held against the chest work a similar movement pattern, until you can access the real equipment.
The minimal equipment that makes a real difference
| Equipment | Approx. cost | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells | $40-90 | Weighted squats, farmer's carry, lunges |
| Weighted bag or backpack | $0-35 | Carrying, sandbag lunge simulation |
| Resistance band | $10-25 | Rowing/ski erg pull simulation |
| Jump rope | $5-15 | Short, intense indoor cardio |
| Exercise mat | $10-25 | Core work, mobility, stretching |
A program built around your equipment
The ZONE8 free program specifies for each session what's achievable at home. And Coach 8 can generate a tailored session based on exactly what you have on hand.
Get the Free ProgramWhen gym access becomes necessary
The ski erg, rower, and sled remain hard to fully replace, especially for getting used to the specific feel of loading and gliding. The best strategy: build your base at home, then book occasional access to a gym in the last 3-4 weeks before the race to get familiar with these specific machines before race day.
FAQ
Can you really prepare for a Hyrox without a gym?
Largely, yes. Running and bodyweight strength work can be fully trained at home. Only certain specific stations need occasional gym access.
What minimal equipment is useful at home?
A pair of adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells, a weighted bag, and a mat cover most of the functional strength work.
How do you replace the sled push?
Weighted lunges, jump squats, or loaded hill walking work similar muscle groups.
