Hyrox taper: what to do in the final week before your race

You won't build fitness in seven days, but you can still ruin everything. The taper is there to get you to the start fresh, not to make up for lost time.

Final week of preparation before a Hyrox race

The goal of the taper

After weeks of training, your body has built up fatigue. A taper means reducing that fatigue while keeping the fitness you've built. Fitness is built over weeks and isn't lost in a few days of relative rest; fatigue, on the other hand, clears quickly when you lighten the load.

Cut volume, keep a little intensity

A common guideline: gradually reduce training volume, down to roughly half your usual load in the final week, while keeping a few short touches of intensity at race pace to hold the feeling. It's only a framework to adjust to your level and history: if in doubt, ask a coach.

Example week for a Sunday race

DaySession
MondayShort combined session: 2 × (1 km at target pace + 20 wall balls)
TuesdayRest, or 30 very easy minutes
Wednesday40 easy minutes + 4 progressive strides
ThursdayRest
Friday20 easy minutes + mobility, pack your bag
SaturdayRest, or 15 minutes of light activation

This schedule is an example, not a prescription: adjust it to your preparation.

Sleep and recovery

The night right before a race is often restless because of nerves, and that's normal. It's mainly the three or four nights before that matter: keep regular hours and aim for good-quality sleep. Don't try to make up for a bad night by adding an extra session.

Nutrition: nothing new

The golden rule: nothing new in the final days. Keep your usual diet, hydrate regularly, and you can slightly favor carbohydrates the day before and two days before if you digest them well. Don't test a new drink or gel on race day. More detail in our nutrition guide before and after Hyrox.

Logistics: sort these out beforehand

The mental side

Some nerves are normal and even useful. Visualize your race station by station and remind yourself of your pacing plan. To go further, read Hyrox mental preparation.

FAQ

How many days should a taper last?

Between 7 and 10 days is a common framework for a one-day race like Hyrox. Adjust to your training volume.

Can you train the day before?

A short light activation session of 15 to 20 minutes is common, but complete rest is just as valid.

Do you need to carb-load?

No extreme protocol: you can slightly favor carbohydrates the day before and two days before if you digest them well. For a precise plan, see a sports dietitian.

What if I feel sick or injured in the final week?

Listen to your body and don't force it. If in doubt about your health, see a healthcare professional before deciding to race.
