Hyrox Roxzone: how to stop losing time in transitions

Between every kilometer of running and every station, the clock never stops. The Roxzone is where many participants lose minutes without realizing it.

Transitions between running and stations in a Hyrox race

What is the Roxzone?

The Roxzone is the transition area between the running track and the stations. You enter it as you leave the run, reach your station, then come back out to start running again. The clock runs continuously throughout the race: every second spent in transition counts toward your final time, exactly like a second spent running or pushing a sled.

Why it costs more than you think

A race has eight stations, so eight entries and eight exits: 16 passes. A purely illustrative example: 10 seconds lost on each pass (hesitation, walking too slowly, equipment poorly positioned) adds up to about 2 minutes 40 seconds lost over the race. Nobody sees those seconds on a results sheet, but they add up.

Entering the station: three habits

Leaving the station: restarting the run

The first 200 meters after a station are the trickiest: legs are heavy and the temptation to set off too fast to "catch up" is strong. An overly fast start usually gets paid for a few hundred meters later. It's better to look for a steady stride, even starting slightly under target pace, then settle in. Our article on Hyrox pacing develops this logic.

Walk or run in the Roxzone?

There is no universal rule. A brisk walk over a few dozen meters can help you recover after a very demanding station and restart better. What costs time is mostly stopping completely, hesitating or resting without control. Test different approaches in training to see what works for you, and check the rules for your race.

Training your transitions

Transitions are trained like any other weak point:

This is the principle behind the combined sessions in our free Hyrox training plan.

Preparing the Roxzone on race day

Before your start, scout the venue layout: where the stations are and where you enter and exit. Visualizing the course reduces hesitation. Find other preparation points in our race day guide.

Train your transitions, not just your stations

FAQ

Is the Roxzone timed?

The clock runs continuously throughout the race: transitions between running and stations count toward your final time.

Can you walk in the Roxzone?

Generally yes, but the point is to do it deliberately and briefly rather than stop. Check the rules for your race.

How do you train transitions?

By chaining running and a station in the same session, timing your entries and exits, and rehearsing each station's entry move.

How much time can you save?

It depends on your starting point. For many beginners, better-managed transitions are a realistic margin of several tens of seconds.
